Background of the Study
Chemotherapy is one of the most common and effective treatments for cancer. However, the success of chemotherapy is heavily dependent on patient adherence to the prescribed treatment regimen. In Zamfara State, as in many other parts of Nigeria, cancer patients may face significant challenges in adhering to chemotherapy schedules due to factors such as financial constraints, side effects of treatment, cultural beliefs, and lack of proper education. Nurses are often responsible for educating patients about the importance of adhering to their chemotherapy treatment and managing the side effects associated with it.
Despite the important role nurses play, the adherence rate to chemotherapy regimens among cancer patients in Zamfara State remains low, which negatively impacts treatment outcomes. This study seeks to evaluate the role of nurses in improving chemotherapy adherence and identify the barriers they face in encouraging patients to comply with their treatment plans.
Statement of the Problem
Non-adherence to chemotherapy treatment is a significant issue in Zamfara State, leading to poor treatment outcomes and reduced survival rates among cancer patients. Nurses play an essential role in improving chemotherapy adherence through patient education and monitoring. However, various challenges hinder their ability to effectively promote adherence. This study aims to evaluate the role of nurses in improving chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients and explore strategies to overcome the barriers to adherence.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the role of nurses in promoting chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients in Zamfara State.
To identify the barriers preventing chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients in Zamfara State.
To recommend strategies for improving chemotherapy adherence through nursing interventions.
Research Questions
What is the role of nurses in promoting chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients in Zamfara State?
What barriers affect chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients in Zamfara State?
What strategies can be implemented by nurses to improve chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses' involvement in patient education significantly improves chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients in Zamfara State.
Financial constraints and cultural beliefs are major barriers to chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients in Zamfara State.
Implementing structured nursing interventions will improve chemotherapy adherence among cancer patients in Zamfara State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in Zamfara State hospitals and the role of nurses in promoting adherence. Limitations include challenges in obtaining accurate data on patient adherence due to variability in patient behavior and self-reporting.
